Beacon - Montelbaanstoren, Amsterdam During one of the worst periods of my life, I used to sit in front of this tower for hours. I would look at it and remind myself that even through times of war, loss, and change, we endure. And that one day, somehow, we find our way forward and rebuild anew. The Montelbaanstoren was built around 1516 as part of Amsterdam’s defensive line, protecting the growing city from attack. As Amsterdam expanded, its purpose changed. It was lowered, rebuilt, given a new upper structure and spire, and eventually became part of the city it had once stood to defend. Centuries later, it is still standing. Not untouched. Not unchanged. But standing. And I think there is something beautiful in that. Beacon is about endurance.
